Energy generation, transmission and distribution are moving towards a multi-faceted evolution. Deregulation and the ensuing competition is one driver. Clean energy and elimination of GHG emissions is the second drive. Decentralization and the emergence of consumer services is the last driver. These three aspects represent competition, technology and empowered consumers. Historically, there is significant evidence how this impacts service providers such as power utilities. More importantly, there are drivers towards edge-oriented product design which will be required to survive in the future.

Beyond this, there are additional opportunities which impact the markets. First, electric service reliability needs to continue improving, which requires new GTD architectures and new generation electrical products. Secondly, the power utility workforce is retiring. Telemetry, automation and redundant services need to be designed to be scalable through a workforce with less experience and skill. Finally, the power utility has long been a darling of the financial and investment markets. This has to be designed with a new level of capital expenditure efficiency, while preserving earnings throughout the required transformation.
