Alice Drake presupposes the US federal government, by 2028, will have caused irrepairable damage to the United States. It might be helpful to look at some examples which may prove this to be right. For instance, the first salvo was an announcement of exorbinant tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China. Last time Trump did this, Asia tore down the global supply chain with the US, and explored creating new trade partners. In the US to China agricultural business, built over tens of years, evaporated. China began buying pork, soy beans and corn from alternative nations. It was so bad, the federal government had to provide cash bailouts to US farmers.

This time will be different. Think about the attacks. Mexico, Canada and China. Strategically, the end result will be China stepping in to larger relationships with Mexico and Canada. This will be a beachhead on the North and Central American candidates for one of our strongest competitors. It will not take long for Russia and North Korea to see this trend. Forging relationships with spurned former partners with the United States. This is simply one of the many things fictionalized in Alice Drake.
